Throughout July, 100 kids from Akko – Jews and Arabs – had a blast together at our Shared Existence Day Camp. Every day, 27 newly-trained youth counselors from the city guided the campers as they cooked, danced and laughed their way through the long summer days together. The Jewish and Arab groups came together daily for joint activities so they could become friends while getting to know and learn about each other. This is an important and enriching experience for the campers
The summer brings to an end a year of meetings for our two fantastic Word-for-Word bilingual groups. Word-for-Word is a program that brings together adults from Akko’s Jewish and Arab communities who have decided to put the effort into learning each other’s languages and bolstering the whole city’s capacity for dialogue. On July, 26 students from the Akko Shared Existence Center who just finished ninth grade joined the Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed youth movement leadership training course. The students, who spent all year getting ready for the course, were thrilled to be given their leadership badges at the closing ceremony. The ceremony officially marks their transition from students to young leaders.
